All the latest Red Devils transfer news, rumours, quotes, gossip and done deals for the January 2020 transfer window
Manchester United remain a potent force in the transfer market, despite their on-pitch struggles in the Premier League and in Europe over the course of the past few seasons.
However, while the Red Devils have been able to bring high-profile stars to Old Trafford for considerable fees, things haven’t exactly worked out on that front either.
Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted that he needs more midfield additions to his squad, but it could be argued that the defence and attack have been lacking, so there is work to be done in the market.

Allowing Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to depart Old Trafford for Inter during the summer raised plenty of eyebrows, but it was apparent that Solskjaer was confident in the abilities of his remaining forwards.
However, while Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have tremendous chemistry, the squad is quite lightweight when it comes to attacking options. Indeed, there is no recognised out-and-out centre-forward.
Having missed out on Erling Braut Haaland and Mario Mandzukic, Jimenez has emerged as the priority target.
Another Wolves player who is on Manchester United’s radar is 22-year-old midfielder Ruben Neves and the club are certainly keen to bring in reinforcements in that area, be it in January or the summer.
However, while he has been linked with the Red Devils in the past, it is understood that Neves is not overly excited by the prospect of a move to Old Trafford, so a blockbuster offer could be required.
Man Utd offered €60.5m (£51m/$67m), with €50m (£42.5m/$55.7m) of that guaranteed for the Portugal international – but Sporting had doubts that the clauses required to recoup the rest of the fee would ever be met (such as Fernandes winning the Ballon d’Or and United winning the Premier League).
Other stars to have been heavily linked include Christian Eriksen and James Maddison, though neither appears likely – certainly not in January.
Man Utd’s swoop for Fernandes collapses
The Red Devils have ended their pursuit of the Sporting midfielder after they deemed his €80 million (£68m/$89m) valuation as too expensive.
Sporting had expected the move to be completed before the end of the January transfer window, but Man Utd co-chairman Joel Glazer axed the deal after concerns raised about the transfer structure.
Inter reject Man Utd Vecino bid
Inter have rejected a loan offer for Matias Vecino from Manchester United – according to Sky Sports .
The Red Devils wanted the 28-year-old as a short-term replacement for Scott McTominay, but the two clubs were unable to agree on a final deal.
Napoli are now in pole position to sign Vecino, with Brazilian midfielder Allan set to move to San Siro in exchange.
‘Man Utd can’t afford to let Cavani go to Chelsea’
Manchester United “cannot afford to let Edinson Cavani go to Chelsea”, says Darren Fletcher.
“If Cavani is available, and there’s talk of him going to Chelsea, Manchester United cannot afford to let Cavani go to Chelsea,” Fletcher said.
“I’m not sure if he is, whether it’s Atletico Madrid, but if it’s Chelsea then there’s no way Manchester United can let that happen. They have to make sure he comes to Old Trafford.”
Raiola unsure over Pogba’s future
Paul Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola revealed that the France international’s fate at Old Trafford is currently uncertain, stating that both club and player need to remain happy – which has not always been the case.
Piatek, Jovic and Alcacer options for Man Utd
According to Bleacher Report , the Red Devils are considering Krzysztof Piatek, Luka Jovic and Dortmund’s Paco Alcacer this transfer window.
Short-term options are being considered, with all three out of favour with their current sides.
No guarantees Fernandes will join Man Utd
Jorge Mendes has revealed that Fernandes is no longer a lock-in to join the Red Devils, admitting that the Portugal international has also held discussions with other clubs.
“I don’t know. If he doesn’t leave now, he will leave for sure in the summer because Sporting have already spoken with other clubs,” said Mendes at the Association of Football Agents (AFA) event in the Hive London.
The most obvious potential departee from Manchester United is Paul Pogba and his future at the club has been thrown into severe doubt following pronouncements by his agent Mino Raiola.
“Today I wouldn’t bring anyone else [to Manchester United],” Raiola said in an explosive interview with La Repubblica in January.
“They would ruin even [Diego] Maradona, Pele and [Paolo] Maldini. Paul needs a team and a society, one like at Juve before.”
Solskjaer is adamant hat the World Cup winner won’t be leaving in January, but it would seem that it’s now just a matter of when and not if.
Nemanja Matic appears resigned to leaving United and the midfielder’s contract is running down, something he conceded means he must assess his options .
Atletico Madrid have been rumoured as a potential destination, while Inter boss Antonio Conte is reportedly interested in the former Chelsea midfielder.
Joining Matic through the exit doors could be defensive duo Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones, while Eric Bailly’s stock has also diminished.
Tahith Chong is set to leave Old Trafford, with his contract expiring in the summer.
